About Banepa

Banepa (Nepali: बनेपा) is a historic town and municipality located in the heart of central Nepal, about 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Kathmandu. Nestled in a picturesque valley at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters (4,900 feet), Banepa is known for its rich cultural heritage, spiritual landmarks, and growing urban development.

As of the 2021 Nepal Census, Banepa is home to over 67,690 residents.

A Town of Culture, Tradition, and Harmony

Banepa is one of the oldest settlements in the Kathmandu Valley, with its roots dating back to the Lichhavi period. It was historically a vibrant trade hub connecting Nepal with Tibet and India.

  • 🛕 Chandeshwori Temple – A sacred site dedicated to Goddess Chandeshwori, located around 1 km northeast of the town along the tranquil Rudramati River.

  • 🛕 Narayanthan – A revered temple of Lord Narayan.

  • 🛕 Bhimshenthan – Dedicated to Bhimsen, the deity of strength and trade.

  • 🛕 Eight Temples of Ganesh – Spread across Banepa, symbolizing protection from all directions.

  • 🌊 Eight Historic Ponds – Important not just for their history, but also for their role in traditional water management and community life.

Festivals like Chandeshwori Jatra, Indra Jatra, and Gaijatra are celebrated with great joy and participation, showcasing the vibrant culture and unity of Banepa’s people.
